Business Goal Setting: The One Question Every Entrepreneur Should Be Asking

What if the decision you’ve been putting off for months could be unlocked by a single question? That’s exactly what happened for Elizabeth Henson, host of the Messy Success Podcast, when her mastermind coach Daryl Vesterfelt introduced her to a deceptively simple coaching prompt: what needs to be true in order to achieve your desired outcome? In this behind-the-scenes solo episode, Elizabeth unpacks how she’s been using that question to make real decisions in her business, and why she thinks every entrepreneur should be asking it too.

Business goal setting often gets overcomplicated. We make lists, we map out strategies, we think about what we want. But Elizabeth argues there’s a step that gets skipped almost every time: getting specific and honest about what needs to actually be in place for the goal to happen. Not just what you want, but what has to be true first. When she asked herself what needed to be true for her to love summer (a season that has historically created a significant mental load because of the tension between working and being present with her kids), the answer was clear. She needed dedicated workspace outside of her home, a set schedule with family support, and the ability to fully separate work mode from home mode.

That answer led her to rent an office space she’s now converting into a podcast studio, something she had been dreaming about since hitting 200 episodes but had been treating as a shiny want rather than a real need. In this episode, she shares how the decision went from a maybe to a done, and what it felt like to sit down in that studio and record for the first time. She also takes you inside her 30-day TikTok live challenge at day 20, including what’s working (20 to 30 new followers every single day), what’s frustrating (the algorithm is not putting her in front of her target audience yet), and why she’s committed to withholding judgment until all 30 days are done. And she touches on a consulting project she almost declined that ended up exciting her more than she expected.

This episode is for the entrepreneur who is somewhere in the middle of something, whether that’s a big decision, a new strategy, or a season that feels harder than it looks from the outside. Elizabeth’s invitation is simple: take the question, apply it to whatever you’re working toward, and be honest about what the answer actually is. The best year yet doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you get clear on what needs to be true, and then go do the thing.
