Opportunity vs Circumstance: Why Making Money Feels Hard (And What to Do About It)
There’s a moment almost every business owner hits. You know exactly what you should be doing next, and you still don’t do it. Not because you’re lazy, and not because you’re not smart enough. In this episode of the Messy Success Podcast, community based marketing strategist and coach Elizabeth Henson breaks down why this happens, and why the real block usually isn’t knowledge at all.
Elizabeth has been coaching entrepreneurs for ten years, and she’s noticed the same pattern over and over. Most people already know what they should be doing to grow their business. Send the emails. Raise the prices. Make the offer. Hire the help. The block comes down to a mindset shift for entrepreneurs that has to happen before action feels possible, and it comes down to a choice between opportunity vs circumstance. Elizabeth explains this with her now famous red car and blue car metaphor. If someone told you they’d pay you five hundred dollars every time you spotted a red car, you’d suddenly see red cars everywhere. It’s not that the cars weren’t there before. You just weren’t paying attention. Circumstance is the blue car. Opportunity is the red car. Most people are so focused on their circumstances that they miss the opportunity sitting right in front of them.
This is also the episode where Elizabeth gets refreshingly direct about why making money is hard as a belief simply isn’t true for her. She talks about watching everyday people build serious income reselling clothes and household items, flipping cars, and solving small problems, and she makes the case that opportunity is far more available than most people let themselves believe. She also opens up about a personal decision behind her own business, choosing to invest in a new podcast studio, and how she used a simple exercise, asking herself what’s the worst that could happen, to move through the discomfort of that decision.
If you’ve been circling a decision in your business for a while now, waiting for it to feel easier or more obvious before you act, this episode is going to feel like it was made for you. Elizabeth’s message is simple and grounded: growth rarely shows up as a bright, obvious opportunity. It usually just feels like discomfort. Take a few minutes to listen in and start noticing where you might be choosing circumstance over opportunity.
