Dealing with Rejection in Business (and the Content Hack That Followed)
If you’ve had a week where rejection in business seemed to be coming from every direction, this episode of the Messy Success Podcast will feel like a conversation with a friend who gets it. Elizabeth Henson, community based marketing strategist and business coach, opens up about a stretch of two weeks where the disappointments stacked up all at once. Contracts ending, opportunities she wasn’t chosen for, feedback to process. Instead of rushing past it the way she usually does, she made the choice to actually sit with it, and what she uncovered was more personal than she expected.
Elizabeth traces her reaction back to a childhood desire to be chosen and accepted by a certain group of kids, and she’s honest about how that same old programming still shows up today when she watches friends get picked for opportunities she applied for too. Rather than making that a reason to shrink, she reframes it. If she’s getting rejected, it means she’s reaching for more. If she’s putting herself in a position to be disappointed, it means she’s playing a bigger game. It’s a mindset shift that doesn’t erase the sting, but it does change what the sting means.
The episode takes an unexpected turn about halfway through. On the very same day she was processing all of this, Elizabeth found herself in a creative rut with her content, unsure what she even had left to say. A conversation with her best friend Angie led her to a phrase that changed her approach entirely: document over create. Instead of trying to invent something new to post, Elizabeth tried documenting what was already happening in her day. She picked up her phone, filmed a simple talking head story, and gave herself full permission to be bad at it. What followed was a flood of content ideas she hadn’t had access to in weeks, and a moment of genuine human connection with someone she met through the process.
What ties both stories together is a simple idea Elizabeth keeps coming back to: reflecting on what you didn’t get can shine a light on where you’ve been playing small. This episode doesn’t offer a tidy formula for either rejection or content creation. It’s a real time, in the moment share of two things happening in the same week, and what they might be teaching her. Press play to hear the whole thing.
