A Business Built Around Your Life: A Personal Story on Freedom in Entrepreneurship
Most conversations about freedom in entrepreneurship stay theoretical. This episode is not that. It’s the real, unscripted story of what happened when Elizabeth got a text from a childhood best friend she hadn’t spoken to much in over a decade, and how having a business built around your life made it possible to say yes without a second thought.
The friend, Lizzie, was flying into Durham, North Carolina to help her father, whose health was declining, and to begin the process of sorting through his home. Elizabeth offered a few local connections at first. But as the details unfolded, something in her would not let it stop there. She cleared her calendar, talked it through with her husband, and committed to an entire week away, sharing an Airbnb with Lizzie and spending her days packing boxes, hauling donations, and simply being present with a friend and a father she had known since childhood.
What makes this story land is not just the trip itself, it’s what it revealed. Elizabeth talks openly about the guilt that surfaces before taking time away, the strange discomfort of being praised for something that felt like a gift to her too, and the deep relief of realizing her business did not fall apart while she was gone. She unpacks the difference between a life built around a business and a business built around a life, and why she believes community, the kind where people understand the entrepreneurial journey without needing it explained, is not optional. It is mandatory.
There is also a quietly full-circle moment in this one. During the trip, Elizabeth learned that Lizzie has started her own jewelry business, Stone and Salt Jewelry, and got to spend the week hearing about her coach, her craft, and her biggest dreams for it, not as a marketing strategist, but simply as a friend who got to hold space for someone else’s dream.
If you have ever wondered whether the business you’re building is actually giving you the freedom it promised, this episode offers a real, lived answer. Take a listen and sit with the question Elizabeth keeps coming back to: what is your business actually allowing you to do?
